5 CURIOSITIES OF HGT
This post is also available in: Español
The Harlem Globetrotters Tour is a show full of impossible and incomparable stunts that do not leave anyone indifferent. The Globetrotter legend was born in Illinois in 1926 and at that time they were a dedicated show team at the Savoy Ballroom in Chicago. For this reason, the name of the emblematic team in its beginnings was the Savoy Big, until they began to play basketball at a professional level.
The Harlem Globetrotters Tour accumulates almost a century of success behind it as one of the most popular shows in the world. A cocktail of sports, surprising skills, comedy and entertainment for the whole family, without the need for you to particularly like basketball – the Globetrotters Tour is for everyone.
For more than 90 years, more than 700 players have passed through the team, delighting 122 countries and territories on six continents with a show. The Globetrotters have several records to their name, such as the first African-American player to sign a contract with the NBA in 1050: we mean Nat ‘Sweetwater’ Clifton. But it was not the only case, and over the years other Globetrotters players joined the ranks of the NBA, reaping successful careers.
The Harlem Globetrotters Tour: Guinness Records and More
There are already 21 the number of Guinness records accumulated by the Globetrotters. In the last edition of the awards in November 2018 they took the last 5 Guinness that make up their collection. One of them was taken by a player who broke a women’s record, Most basketball under the leg tumbles, in one minute: she got a total of 32.
One of the curiosities of this legendary team that deserves to be highlighted is that it had as its player the first woman who played in a professional basketball team. It was Olympic gold medalist Lynette Woodard, in 1985, thus paving the way for the 16 women who have played for the Globetrotters to date.
Another curiosity is that the Globetrotters were the first team to send a basketball into space on the Space Shuttle Atlantis mission to the Hubble Telescope in 2009.
And another detail to point out as a curious fact in its history is that this team has the best winning percentage in the history of professional sports. Translated into numbers it means that he has won more than 26,000 matches and has lost only 345.
As a final culmination of the curiosities of the Globetrotters, it is worth mentioning that in 2010 they introduced the 4-point shot to basketball. This means making a basket from 10.6 meters in the last three minutes of every quarter, quite a feat!
