The Invented Body, the female figure through the history of fashion
Beauty is a cultural concept that has evolved over the years. The beauty canon has been determined in each era by economic, social, political and artistic factors. In the case of women, the female body has been living – and suffering on many occasions – these modifications. There are practices of all kinds: from the lightest ones that dress or undress, cover or uncover to the most radical ones that lengthen, cushion, contract, deform or imprison the female anatomy.
Although until the 19th century the modifications of the beauty canon were subtle and were extended for years, decades or even for centuries, it is in the 20th century when the processes accelerate and the woman’s body has seen all kinds of transformations in her way to cover Thus, the exhibition The Invented Body is about this history of beauty around the costume of the last 100 years.
The Invented Body proposes an analysis of how the woman’s body has been drawn over the last century, after the end of World War I. From the refined cut of the 20s, through the vertical elegance of the 30s or the new femininity of the New Look by Christian Dior. From the hidden body with which Balenciaga revolutionizes fashion or the new concept of women in pants by Yves Saint Laurent or Giorgio Armani, not forgetting the current moment in which the nude dresses the woman. A trip, in addition, through great aesthetic references of each moment, such as Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth, Madonna, Lady Gaga or Audrey Hepburn.
The Madrid Invented Body, exceptional ambassadors
Throughout the history of dress, fashion has used influential people to spread. Until the nineteenth century, it was the aristocracy who used to have this mission, but at the end of that century this trend begins to evolve and it is women in the field of culture and entertainment who become prescribers of fashion for dissemination. Next to a specific silhouette there is usually an influential woman legitimizing it: How could we unlink the silhouette that narrows the waist, projects the breasts and widens the hips of actress Marilyn Monroe?
This exhibition gathers the role of those famous women who have consolidated the different aesthetic canons, taking a tour of the most influential names of fashion of the twentieth century. Thus, during the visit, the spectator can enjoy dresses that belonged to Madonna, Claudia Schiffer, Rita Hayworth, Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren or Lady Gaga, among other relevant women.
The Spanish landscape is represented by personalities such as S.M. Doña Letizia, women from the entertainment world like Silvia Abascal, Marujita Díaz or from the world of politics like Esperanza Aguirre.
A special section of this exhibition will be dedicated to the presenter Cristina Pedroche who, with her New Year’s dresses, helps us to reflect on the body, fashion and reaction of the observer.
