Two young people passionate about music

Korg was born in 1962 in Tokyo from the hand of Tsutomu Kato and Tadashi Osanai. Kato ran a music club. Osanai was a college boy who played the accordion and played regularly at the Kato club with a Wurlitzer Sideman drum machine. Dissatisfied with the machine’s results, Osanai convinced Kato to finance his efforts to build a better one.

Thus was born Keio Gijutsu Kenkyujo Ltd, the germ of Korg. And soon his first product, an electromechanical rhythm device, the Donca Matic DA-20, would arrive in 1963.

In 1967 he joined Kato and Osanai Fumio Mieda, an engineer who wanted to build keyboards. In 18 months he had created the first programmable keyboard that he called KORG using the first letter of each founder’s name, plus “RG”, originally planned for products intended for the organ market.

Keio’s organs were very popular in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. But, concerned about competition, Kato decided to expand and use the same technology to create synthesizers. In 1973 the first synthesizer was born, the miniKORG.

The Japanese brand has always stood out for its constant innovations. For example, the function “key transpose” (Kato’s idea) the first synthesizer with effects, or the first sound designs “sample + synthesis”.
Since then, it has always remained a leader in the digital high-tech market.
